Edgewater JSEL Celebrates Another Great Summer Program

JSEL at Edgewater ElementaryJeffco Summer of Early Learning (JSEL) held at Edgewater Elementary enjoyed another productive "off-season." JSEL is a learning environment that fosters literacy and disciplinary math numeracy and literacy skills, giving learners a jump start on their next school year.

The program had 120 students for 6 weeks, offering a dual language program with 4 Spanish and 6 English classrooms of 10 - 15 students each for K - 3. Students researched their chosen countries, reading and writing about them, and closed with a celebration of their learning with families. Lorrie Joseph, summer school principal, shared, "We saw growth academically and socially from many students - many K students came in not knowing how to hold a pencil or form letters, and by the end of the 6 weeks could write a complete sentence. Older students showed gains in their reading level and decoding skills and strengthened their math skills and understanding of strategies." Socially, students made friends, learned to cooperate and manage working with others, and fine-tuned skills for following routines. Parents reported their children enjoyed coming to summer school and felt they would be better prepared to start school in August. Great work Edgewater JSEL!
