ABOUT WORK-BASED LEARNING 

Work-based learning is a continuum of activities that occur, in part or in whole, in the workplace, providing the learner with hands-on, real-world experience. 

Below are ways for students, families, and the community to learn about WBL opportunities in the district.

Learning About Work

Career Awareness and Exploration

Students at Aviation Day
Learn about work through specific exploration activities designed to help students better understand the types of careers available and the ability to explore career options.




Career Exploration Fair/Expo

Students at Career Expo
An opportunity for industry to provide valuable information for students on specific careers within their industry. These events include sharing materials and providing hands-on experiences.



Career Presentation/Guest Speaker

Firefighter Guest Speaker
Industry professionals design and present about all aspects of their industry to students.




Industry Interview

Students in Interviews
Students identify and interview a professional in the industry that they are interested in exploring.





Industry Mentorship

Culinary Student and Mentor
An industry professional builds a relationship with students through ongoing career coaching. This includes the professional sharing their experiences with a group of no more than five students.


Job Shadow

Sheriff Job Shadow
A work experience option where students learn about a job by following an industry partner for a day.







Project or Problem Based Learning

STEM Student Working on Project
An opportunity for students to explore an industry identified problem or project. The work is completed at the school and involves students presenting their learning to industry experts.



Worksite Tour

Students on Worksite Tour
An opportunity for students to learn beyond the classroom and visit industry. This experience allows students to observe and investigate activities related to a specific career and pathway.




Learning Through Work

Career Preparation

Learning through work is an opportunity for students to experience a career through extended learning opportunities outside of a traditional classroom. These experiences require a strong, collaborative partnership. These experiences will need to be co-developed between the district, school, and industry partner.

Workplace Experience

An experience where students can learn transferable skills that prepares them for the workforce. This experience is essentially an entry level position within the specified place of employment. This opportunity must be connected to a classroom component related to a Career and Technical Education program.

Internship

An opportunity for exposure to the requirements of a particular industry and the behavioral expectations for success on the job. These experiences are expected to provide formal training for occupational skills.


Pre-Apprenticeships

Welding Pre-ApprenticeServices and programs, including classroom instruction, designed to prepare students to enter and succeed in Registered Apprenticeship (RA) programs.

Career Explore

Intern in Hospitality
Career Explore is a unique program that actively reengages students in school through career readiness activities that leverage work-based learning and internships. We strive to provide hope for students to create a successful and bright future.

In an effort to provide all students with an education that leads them to being college and career ready, students who qualify for Career Explore programming can participate in a work-based learning option with a capstone project that demonstrates skill proficiencies. Students are provided with a flexible learning schedule, financial literacy instruction, Jeffco Generation Skills, and exposure to various types of career clusters. Based on the student's area of interest, students have the option to explore and attend work-readiness training, earn industry certifications, and participate in paid internships.

Career and Technical Education

CTE Students
Jeffco Public Schools are dedicated to preparing all students for careers and lifelong learning. Our mission is to prepare all students for successful careers through the real-world application of core academic skills by partnering classrooms with businesses, industries, and communities which positively impacts the future workforce.

Jeffco has Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs in neighborhood middle schools and high schools as well as our premier career and technical schools, Warren Tech and Warren Tech North.

All CTE programs offer academic, elective, and/or college credit.

CareerWise

Apprentice at his worksite

CareerWise modern youth apprentices earn a wage while receiving hands-on work experience where they can apply their high-school classroom learning each week. By the conclusion of the program, students will have:

  • meaningful work experience
  • a nationally-recognized industry certification
  • a professional network 
  • the opportunity to earn debt-free college credit.

The apprenticeship lasts three years to ensure students have the experience to either enter the workforce upon completion or continue on to higher education with a more focused path toward their career goals. The three-year model ensures businesses realize financial ROI based on the apprentice’s production and develop a skilled talent pipeline for hard-to-fill positions. CareerWise offers apprenticeship in five diverse career pathways.

Executive High School Internship

Intern with the Golden Fire Department
The Executive High School Internship program will provide high school seniors who are accepted into the program the opportunity to gain exposure to a career field they hope to pursue after graduation. The interns complete 100 non-paid hours at their internship site, complete weekly summaries and hourly reports, obtain sponsor approval of time sheets every four weeks and complete the final project as assigned by the Program Director. Jefferson County Public Schools insurance covers interns while on site at their internship location. Interns receive one-half academic credit for the internship and one-half credit for the workplace readiness as a letter grade on their transcript.
