The flu virus is spread through respiratory droplets while coughing, sneezing, and talking. It is also spread by touching a contaminated surface, then touching your mouth, eyes, and/or nose. People with the flu are able to spread the virus beginning one day before symptoms appear and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick. This means the flu can be spread even before you realize you are sick, as well as throughout the illness.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people who may have the flu. If you become ill with flu-like symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that you stay home for a minimum of 24 hours after a fever is gone, without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze - or cough and sneeze into the inside of your elbow if a tissue is not handy - and dispose of the tissue immediately. The best defense against the flu is to wash your hands with soap and running water frequently, and for at least 20 seconds each time. Also, clean and disinfect surfaces and objects often that may be contaminated with the flu virus.
