Notes from the Health Room
Sniffle, Cough, etc. What do I do when my child is sick?
As we are moving out of the pandemic, many parents have questions about when to keep their student home from school. I recommend that you refer to the document below for a comprehensive list of examples of 'how sick is too sick for school'. Please be sure to call the school to report every absence, as well.
Medication: Parents must provide a medication form signed by their healthcare provider for ANY medicine to be taken at school. This includes cough drops, tylenol, allergy medicine, etc. This is due to a change in district policy. The school does not stock medicine of any kind in the health room.
What's Bugging You? Let's Talk about Lice!
Schools may see a spike in lice cases after school breaks: Summer, Winter, and again after Spring Break. This is often falsely attributed to the return to the school environment, but is actually due to being in the community for an extended period of time. School breaks are times when children commonly have sleepovers, go to camp or visit relatives, and then return to school. Rather than being the direct cause of infestation, the school setting is often the location where lice are identified.
If you have concerns regarding the possibility of your child coming into contact with lice, please check your child’s head on a regular basis (for nits or lice). Over the Counter preparations such as Nix, Rid, Clear, and Pronto remain first line choices for treatment, and should be discussed with your physician.

CFC assists any individuals inquiring about Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and other health-related resources.
Hearing and vision screenings are conducted for students in their schools according to the Colorado Department of Education guidelines.
The Department of Health Services at Jeffco Public Schools recognizes that any student or family can have lice. Jeffco’s district nurses follow several protocols and are an excellent resource for school administration, teachers, parents and families.
Parents and guardians of Jeffco Public Schools students can purchase student accident, athletic and dental insurance coverage.
Health Services in Jeffco
Jeffco Public Schools' Department of Health Services provides health consultation and resources to support students and their families.
Each school has a district Registered Nurse (RN) who consults with students, families, school staff and administration. Ask your student’s school for their district RN contact details and notify the RN if your student has a health need that requires support during the school day.
Each school also has a school health aide who does day-to-day care of students such as medication, Band-Aids, and ice.
Keep your student’s health concerns updated at registration and as conditions change during the school year. It is important for Jeffco to have current contact information of families.
When Students and Staff Should Stay Home
Jeffco follows the recommendations from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on when students and staff should stay home from school, work or childcare. District RNs provide guidance to school administration following the How Sick is Too Sick document.
The best ways to stop the spread of infection is through good hand washing and staying home when sick.
Immunizations
Colorado law requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed childcare centers to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless a medical or non-medical exemption is filed.
For information about vaccine requirements, resources and exemptions, visit the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s School-Required Vaccines page.
