Week 1

Simply put, stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, frustrated, scared, or afraid — which can give you a stomachache or a headache (  Talking about, and normalizing, stress and the feelings it causes can be a healthy family discussion.  As a family, read Good Stress vs. Bad Stress for Kids  from the website and explore the “At a Glance” key takeaways.

Week 2

This short video Why Do We Lose Control of Our Emotions? from Kids Want to Know explains what happens when our emotions control us.

  • Discuss a recent time this has happened to you and then ask when it has happened to your student.
  • Explain what you did in the moment that your emotions controlled you and ask your student the same.
  • Discuss what you both understand after watching the video.
Week 3

Breathing is a great tool for calming our bodies and minds. UC Health reports that breathing deeply comes with various benefits, including slowing the heartbeat, lowering or stabilizing blood pressure and lowering stress.  Choose among some of the options for practicing breathing and do them together when calm.  Then, talk about and practice using these techniques the next time stress comes knocking.

Week 4

The Mayo Clinic tells us that laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain to activate and relieve your stress response.  Finding humor each day can support healthy stress management.  Learn more!
