Those wishing to speak to the Board may do so at regular business meetings and occasional single topic special meetings. Public Comment sign up is available online and on the Public Comment agenda items at 10 a.m. the Monday prior to the regular Thursday meeting and until 3:30 p.m. the day of that meeting unless otherwise noted on the meeting agenda due to managing virtual participation related to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

If you sign up to address a specific agenda item, the Board president will give you an opportunity to speak during public comment. If your topic is unrelated to the meeting's agenda please submit written comments to board@jeffco.k12.co.us. Up to one hour will be allotted to public comment in the first half of the meeting for that evening's business items.

Time is managed in the most effective manner to include as many community voices as possible within the time allotted. Generally, there is a three-minute time limit for individual speakers and if four or more individuals sign up as a group on the same topic they are allotted 10 minutes to arrange their time in any respectful way the collective individuals decide. If more than 20 individuals sign up to speak to the Board, we limit individual speakers to two minutes and groups to five minutes so that the Board can hear from as many citizens as possible. If more than 30 individuals sign up, a one-minute time limit for individual speakers and three-minutes for groups will be used.

It is best to plan your presentation in advance and make your presentation as clear and concise as possible. You are welcome to email prepared remarks to the Board at board@jeffco.k12.co.us.  For virtual public comment: additional direction will be emailed to those who sign up for public comment (i.e., link to join the board meeting) prior to the meeting.

All those who are signed up to speak as a group must be able to accompany the speaker (for virtual public comment: see additional emailed directions). Individuals may sign up only once (as speaker or group member) to address the Board. The Board asks that remarks address new thoughts or concepts. Remember, it is not the number of people who address the Board that leads to better decision-making, rather the content of your presentation.

The School Board considers public opinion when making future decisions. The Board receives citizen input with respect and expects those who address the Board to observe the same courtesy. Individuals who address personalities rather than issues will not be heard.

Citizens who have signed up for Public Comment will have the opportunity to have their concerns heard by the Board. Since the Board is the policy-making body of the school district, it is most appropriate to address the direction of policy with the Board. Individual concerns are best resolved closest to the situation. Parents are encouraged to contact their local school or central department to handle a specific problem. 

The following persons are eligible to address the Board:

  • residents of the district
  • parents of students enrolled in district schools
  • members of the staff
  • individuals who have been requested by the superintendent or Board to present a given subject
  • nonresidents of the district who have previously requested and received the permission of the superintendent or Board
